Margin requirement

1) What is Margin Req (%)?

This is the margin requirement on your position, expressed as a percentage.

2) What is Margin Req ($)?

This is the margin required on your position, expressed as dollars. It’s used to calculate the maintenance excess available for trading, shown on the balances page of your platform. This figure does not change throughout the day.

Margin Req ($) calculated using either:

  • the closing price of your position from the previous trading day
  • the opening price of a position you opened today

Example: a $1,000 position with a 30% Margin Req (%) would have a Margin Req ($) of $300. This means that you require $300 of maintenance excess to open and maintain the position.

3) What is RT Margin Req ($)?

This is the real-time margin required on your position, and is calculated using current bid/ask prices. This figure is used to calculate your real-time maintenance excess. It’s shown in the top bar of your positions screen.

4) What is RT Maint Excess (CAD/USD Comb)?

This figure is the real-time maintenance excess in your account. It’s calculated using the current bid/ask prices of the positions in your account. This number will change as the market moves. This figure is for informational purposes only. You will not be able to use your real time maintenance excess to make trades. This figure updates only during regular market hours and is not available in the extended market.

5) Why can’t I use my RT Maint Excess to make trades?

To ensure proper risk management, it is Questrade’s policy to not allow use of your real time maintenance excess for trading. You can see the maintenance excess available for trading in the balances page of your platform.
