Comparing two or more symbols on the same chart

Apart from the main symbol, you can add up to five secondary symbols to a chart in order to carry out a comparison study. When you add secondary symbols, a comparison is made between trends of change rather than absolute values such as price. The chart’s price axis automatically changes to a percentage axis. The first data point in the graph for all the symbols being compared is selected as the anchor point for the comparison.

When comparing charts, the closing value of each unit is considered. In addition, while the primary chart can be of any type, the secondary chart is always a line chart.

The Compare menu allows you to quickly compare up to seven pre-configured indices, including:

  • Dow Jones
  • NYSE
  • NASDAQ
  • S&P 500
  • S&P/TSX
  • Gold/Silver
  • Volatility

In addition, you can also compare up to five custom symbols and overlay them on the chart's main window.

Compare pre-configured indices

To compare two or more pre-configured indices:

  1. In the main window, click Research. Then click Chart .

  2. Click Compare  and select at least one index. The index's data will be compared against the existing symbol in the main chart. In the example below, two indexes are being compared.

The charts appear overlaid in the main window with the same line style and colour.

  1. To change the line style or colour, click Compare  and choose Edit comparison, or click the index name in the chart's toolbar. The compare charts window will open.

  2. Select a line colour, line style and line weight for each index.

  3. To delete the existing index selection and select another index instead, click  at the end of the index row. Then enter the index you want to add in the symbol lookup field above the index rows and click Add symbol. Then click OK.

Compare custom symbols

To compare two or more symbols:

  1.  In the main window, click Research. Then click Chart .

  2. Click Custom symbol or Edit comparison. The Compare charts window will open.

  3. In the symbol lookup field, enter the symbol or company name you want  to compare. Then click Add symbol. Each symbol that's added will be given a different colour automatically.

  4. If desired, select a different line colour, line style, and line weight for the symbol.

  5. Repeat this process for every symbol you want to compare. You can compare up to five symbols simultaneously.

  6. After you've finished adding all the symbols you want to compare, click OK.

  7. An any time, to remove the symbol you are comparing from the main chart, right-click the symbol chart and select Remove comparison <symbol name> from the pop-up menu, or click  next to the index name in the chart's toolbar.
